Rani Jarkas - Will Hong Kong Remain Financial Centre of Asia?

The comfort of doing business in Hong Kong and its status as the ‘Gateway to China’ and the largest offshore renminbi centre in the world, makes it the evident place for companies to locate their headquarters in Asia.

But the fact cannot be held for denial that the crown of Hong Kong may be at risk slipping as China continues to internationalize the Renminbi, while political unrest creates unpredictability and other regional financial centres develop quickly.

The Benefits of Hong Kong:

Rani Jarkas, Chairman of Cedrus Investments, a global boutique investment firm headquartered in Hong Kong, believes that the benefits of doing business in this great city are not difficult to find at all. Some of the benefits include being ranked the as the freest economy in the world by the US’s Heritage Foundation and highly educated workers in the territory.

That’s not all! The open and competitive business environment in Hong Kong, its sound regulatory framework and its low corporate tax rate make it easy to see as well as understand why more and more companies choose Hong Kong for their global and regional headquarters.

Hong Kong is the largest asset management centre in Asiam with a combined fund management business worth HK$17.393tn. It also had the highest level of IPOs in the world during the first six months of 2016, with HK$43.5 billiuon raised through the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

But probably most necessarily of all, Hong Kong is the largest offshore renminbi business centre, managing approximately three-quarters of all RMB payments.

Patrick Ho, deputy head of equity, APAC, UBS CIO Wealth Management, comments: “Hong Kong is the leading financial hub in Asia, there is no question about it.”

Ho states that despite the fact that Hong Kong is no longer the only renminbi offshore centre in the world, it is still by far the biggest.

Singapore is breaking Hong Kong’s heels as its government advances to focus on initiatives to entice various businesses.

Well, Singapore has taken one step further in the Global Financial Centres Index, produced by think-tank Z/Yen Group.

Mark Yeandle, associate director at Z/Yen Group of Companies, comments: “Singapore is another extremely successful city and they are looking to become even more successful.”

Rani Jarkas strongly acknowledges the fact that Hong Kong is in such a strong position, partly because it’s the natural offshore centre for mainland China.

Rani Jarkas: China A shares will be included in the MSCI Emerging Markets Index

MSCI Inc. (NYSE: MSCI) announced on June 20, 2017 that beginning in June 2018, it will include China A shares in the MSCI Emerging Market Index and the MSCI ACWI Index.
The MSCI Emerging Markets Index is one of the world's most widely recognized measurements for stock performance in emerging markets. The index tracks the performance of more than 800 stocks in 23 economies, more than 70 percent of which are in Asia.
About $1.7 trillion in global assets are benchmarked to the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, and overseas investors will start buying A shares when they are included in the index. That in turn would cause the A-share markets to see a further strong rise, Shanghai-based news website thepaper.cn reported on last Monday.
Rani Jarkas, Chairman of Cedrus Investments, a global boutique investment firm with offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, said, “MSCI’s decision to include A shares in its index shows that China's economy is growing stably, and has a lot of potential. As more international capital flows in, the A-share markets will no longer be dominated by local investors and financial products in mainland stock markets will become more diversified.”

Rani Jarkas: The Belt and Road Initiative: The Biggest Economic Cooperation Project Today

In mid-May, Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed the world leaders attending the Belt and Road Forum (BRF) for International Cooperation in Beijing. The forum is a major boost and accelerator for synergies along the roads.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde commented on the BRF that “The Belt and Road Initiative is about connecting cultures, communities, economies, and people, and about adding new economic flavors by creating infrastructure projects that are based on 21st-century expertise and governance standards.”

The Belt and Road Initiative is a pioneering, international framework based on an "open platform concept," which does not need a leader, but a curator who acts as a catalyst and coordinator for ensuring win-win outcomes, said Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum.

Rani Jarkas, Chairman of Cedrus Investments, an experienced investor in the region under Belt and Road Initiative, said, “The Belt and Road Initiative is meant to help developing countries to create more opportunities for growth and improve the lives of people. The breadth of this initiative, the high level of participation and its strategic dimensions, highlight its capacity to become the biggest economic cooperation project in place in this century.”
